How do you spell miserable?
We spell it, "The winter of 2000-2001",
aka "Winter Uninterrupted".
LINCOLN: 10th Coldest Winter in 115 years of data records!
OMAHA: 23rd Coldest Winter in 130 years of data records,
and, the 12th coldest since 1900.
This year - February 21, 2001:
The high temperatures were 18 F in Lincoln and 18 F in Omaha.
The only other colder high temperature for this date in Lincoln was 16 F way back in 1894.  Yes, it was the coldest high temperature for the date in over 100 years!

One year ago - February 22, 2000:
The high temperatures were 71 F in Lincoln and 65 F in Omaha.
One year ago - February 28, 2000:
The high temperatures were 71 F in Lincoln and 71 F in Omaha.

This year - February 28, 2001:
The high temperatures were 26 F in Lincoln with a low of -2 F and 28 F in Omaha with a low of 4 F.

NOTE the temperature maps at the end of the report!

This year, December 1, 2000 to February 28, 2001, Lincoln had only 3 days 50 F or higher.  Last year, December 1, 1999-February 28, 2000 Lincoln had 33 days 50 F or higher.

Lincoln, NE, Winter 1999-2000 and Winter 2000-2001 # days 50 F or higher:
Dec. 1999,  11 days;  Jan 2000,  8 days;  Feb. 2000,  14 days =  33 days
Dec. 2000,   1 day; Jan 2001,  2  days; Feb. 2001, 0 days = 3  days

Omaha, NE, Winter 1999-2000 and Winter 2000-2001
Dec. 1999,  11 days;  Jan 2000,  2 days;  Feb. 2000, 12 days = 25 days
Dec. 2000,  1 day; Jan 2001,  1 days; Feb. 2001, 0 days = 2 days

What a difference a year makes.

As of October 31, 2000, year 2000 was was the warmest year on record for the U.S.   Then along came November and December 2000, which were the coldest in U.S recorded history.

How miserable exactly is this winter so far?  Very miserable.

Going back to November 1, 2000 Lincoln has had 37.7 inches of snow, last winter Lincoln only had 11.9 inches of snowfall.   Last winter Lincoln had only 7 days of snowfall from November 1, 1999 to February 29, 2000.  This winter, Lincoln has had 25 days with snowfall since November 1.

This winter, November 1, 2000 - February 28, 2001  we have had 13 days below zero, and last winter we only had 2 days below zero.

Since January 1, 2001, Lincoln has had only 2 days above 50 F, last year Lincoln had 22 days above 50 F between January 1 and February 29, the temperature exceeded 70 F twice in February 2000. So far this February 2001, Lincoln hasn't even reached the 50's with the highest temperature of the month being 47 F.

Since December 1, 2000 Lincoln has had only had 3 days above 50 F, last winter (December 1, 1999-February 28, 2000) Lincoln had 33 days above 50 F.

Omaha, February 2001, highest temperature = 44 F.
Only 4 other Februarys (out of 130 years of data) had a colder highest February temperature: 1875  40 F;  1978, 41 F; 1975, 43 F; and, 1881, 43 F.

Lincoln, February 2001, highest temperature = 47 F.
Only 7 other Februarys (out of 115 years of data) had a colder highest February temperature:  1978, 41 F; 1969, 42 F; 1975, 43 F; 1949, 43 F; 1993, 44 F; 1979, 44 F; 1940, 45 F.

The average date for the first 60 degree reading in Lincoln is February 12 (the earliest is actually January 1 in 1939) and Lincoln has gone well past that date without a 60 degree temperature.

Record highs for the end of February and early March for Lincoln are in the upper 70's and lower 80's and we are as far away from that as you can get.  For example, yesterday's (February 21, 2001) high of 18 F was the 2nd coldest high ever for that date with the coldest high of 16 F being recorded way back in 1894!

OUTLOOK:

The door is closing to the Canadian arctic air and it should be moderating starting next week.  The good and bad news is, the door is still open to the Pacific "pineapple express" as storm after storm heads toward the west coast from Hawaii.  These storms are bringing needed moisture to the area, but the clouds are going to hold down the temperatures and the soil is frozen so the rains and snows over the next week or so will just be runoff and won't soak into the ground.  We may even have our first thunderstorm of the year this past weekend (Feb. 24, 2001) as the warm spring time air began to move into the area.
