Sandhills Region of Nebraska, August 2001
All Images © 2001 K. Dewey, High Plains Regional Climate Center
Photographed midway between Mullen, NE and Thedford, NE along Hwy. 2,
the Middle Loup river, and its valley are shown in the center of the photo.
Photographed just east of Mullen, NE on Hwy. 2, the region is
unusually green due to recent timely rains. The Middle Loup river,
not visible, created the valley in the middle of the image. Sand is
exposed along the distant bank of the river revealing the vast amount
of sand in the Nebraska Sand Hills region.
Photographed just east of Mullen, NE on Hwy. 97, the sand can be
seen exposed in a "blowout" in the upper left region. Some of the most
spectacular scenery in this area can be seen along this road between
Mullen, NE and Valentine, NE.
The Middle Loup River just north of Mullen, NE on Hwy. 97.
Sand is visible on the hills due to the normally thin grass cover.
The Dismal river just south of Mullen NE, on Hwy. 97.

The Sandhills region is used primarily for cattle ranching as seen here
20 miles south of Mullen NE, and 5 miles south of the Dismal River along
Hwy. 97. The grass cover has blown away in several spots exposing
the underlying sand dunes.
An abandoned house and wind mill sit surrounded by grassland and
fields of yellow flowers south of Tryon, NE and along Hwy. 97.
This area is on the southern edge of the Sandhills region and
about 20 miles north of North Platte.
