This is the only man-made national forest in the U.S. and is
located in Thomas County and the northern portion of the Sand Hills
region along the Middle Loup River.


This is the main road through the forest leading up to the forest fire
observation tower (seen just above the top of the trees in the distance.

Note the abrupt edge to the forest in the distance and the more recently
planted (shorter trees)  section toward the top middle.

Note the abrupt edge to the forest in the distance and the ragged edge in
the right foreground.  A forest fire in 1965 destroyed the trees in the right
foreground area of the photo and trees have started to fill in the area again.

 This is the small tree farm on the grounds of the Nebraska National Forest
Headquarters, where trees are being grown to be added to the forest.
