Record Winds
The Oklahoma City tornado of May 3, 1999 produced 318 mph winds, the strongest ever recorded, according to Joshua Wurman of the University of Oklahoma and reported by Jack WIlliams in USA TODAY, May 11, 1999. A doppler radar mounted on a truck registered the speed as the funnel moved through south Oklahoma City. The fastest speed previously measured was 286 mph in 1991 in a tornado at Red Rock, in northern Oklahoma.
