Top 10 Weather and Climate Events of Year 2000
for Lincoln, NE

1. The Drought. 
July 1999 to December 2000, only 4 of 18 months had above normal precipitation. 

2.  November-December Cold Wave
Only one other November 7-December 25 during the past 114 years was colder than this period during the Year 2000.  It was one of Lincoln's most persistent cold waves in history.

3.  December 2000 snowfall.
The 15.4 inches of snowfall in Lincoln was the 5th snowiest in 101 years of snowfall data.  It was the most snowfall since 1973 and returned Lincoln to reality after several relatively snow free winters.

4.  Very Warm January and February 2000
Jan was 6.9 deg and February 9.4 degrees above normal, lawns stayed green, little ice on rivers and lakes.

5.  Summer rains save region's crops
Timely rains hit in June and July with above normal precipitation saving crops from desiccation.

6.  Cool start to the Summer
June was 0.8 degrees and July 2.0 degrees below normal giving Lincoln one more in a long string of relatively mild summers.

7.  September record heat
The hottest temperatures ever for a home Husker football game on September 2 of 106 was the hottest ever record September temperature in Lincoln (114 years of data).

8.  July 20th Lancaster county hailstorm.
Golf ball size hail with hurricane force winds struck Firth, NE just south of Lincoln during the middle of the night literally stripping paint off of buildings and smashing windows.

9.  February 18 snowstorm in Lincoln and southeast Nebraska.
During a winter with minimal snowfall (only 11.7 inches from October 1999-April 2000), only one snow storm hit the city.  It caused momentary disruption to activity in the area but was quickly replaced with very warm temperatures.

10.  June 13 thunderstorm and tornado outbreak in southeast Nebraska.
Mid afternoon thunderstorm formed right on top of Lincoln and repeatedly produced tornadoes as they moved out of county.  One more time, Lincoln had a close call  and was spared from having a tornado move across the city.
