Heavy hail, winds leave damage in Southeast Nebraska

BEATRICE (AP) -- Up to 2 inches of hail fell Thursday and winds downed tree limbs and ripped shingles off roofs at Crab Orchard in Southeast Nebraska as a predawn storm swept through the region.

Crab Orchard is about 25 miles east of Beatrice.

Hail the size of golf balls fell in Firth, about 25 miles north of Beatrice, breaking about two dozen windows at the Lakeview rest home and damaging windows, roofs and siding in more than 100 homes in the town of 380. Hail also damaged crops and high winds knocked down trees and damaged farm equipment.

Hail feel near Adams, and the storm sheared off some of the corn crop near that town.

Winds knocked a tree limb onto an electrical wire in Beatrice, and some areas in and around the city lost power during the storm. Exactly what caused the outages was not immediately known.

Storms also hit central Nebraska early Thursday, and tornado warnings were issued for Greeley, Howard, Nance and Merrick counties. No damage was reported.
