Record Average Monthly Temperatures
Across Much of the U.S.


Almost the entire area of the 48 states averaged above normal during January 2006.
The largest departure from normal was in the northern Great Plains where temperatures
averaged 15 to 20 degrees above normal.

The following chart lists all of the monthly temperature records observed in January 2006.

The daily highs and lows were averaged each day (for example a high of 50 F and a low of 30 F would
have an average of 40 F).  These daily average temperatures were then compared to the normal for each day.
The difference (departure) from normal was plotted on the above graph for each day.


The record breaking warm spell (heat wave) began on December 21, 2005.
