The Early 2005 Cold Wave in Lincoln, Nebraska

After a record breaking high temperature of 66 F on December 30, 2004 the temperatures began
to fall, day after day until they bottomed out at -18 F on January 15 and 16.  This was a temperature
difference of 84 degrees!  Scottsbluff, warmed from -15 F on January 6 to a spring like 67 F on
January 20, 2005 which was a warm up of 82 degrees.

The following graph shows the severity of the cold for Lincoln, NE.
The High temperatures of January 5 and 6 were as cold as the average low temperature for the date.
And to add insult to injury, the high temperatures on January 14 and 15,
were actually well below the normal LOW temperature.  At the peak of the cold wave,
temperatures approached 30 degrees below normal.

No record lows were established in Lincoln, but they were nearly missed on several days during the cold wave.


The top of each vertical black bar is the observed high temperature and the bottom of
the black bar is the observed low temperature.  The red and blue lines are the normal
or average highs and lows for the date.
