April 6, 2001 Storms in the Heartland
The Nebraska Vortex Intercept Team mobilized on Friday April 6, 2001 to chase storms in western Kansas.  This is a brief account of their chase.  SPC issued a 25% probability of tornadoes in western Kansas (see map below), a deep low pressure system was forecast to rapidly move northeast out of Colorado into Nebraska.  Forecast models indicated that there would be high instability in western Kansas and the panhandle of Oklahoma and as well as a developing dryline.  Our primary worry was that the storms would not develop into isolated supercells with tornadoes would would instead become linear, that is a squall line.  And, it was also feared that the upper air wind speeds would be so strong that the storms would be moving too fast to chase.
