Tornado Hits Salt Lake City

At 1 PM MDST, August 11, 1999,  a rare tornado passed through downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.  The National Weather Service has surveyed the damage and has rated it as an F-2 tornado, which would be the strongest tornado ever observed in Utah.  The entire state of Utah only averages 2 tornadoes a year and has never recorded a tornado stronger than an F-2, so this was certainly an unusual event.  There were numerous injuries and one fatality as the tornado struck an outdoor exhibition hall across the street from the Wyndham Hotel.  Windows were blown out of the Delta center and spectacular video was shot of the actual tornado by a television station located within a few hundred yards of the tornado's path.  This is the first tornado fatality ever in the state of Utah.
