Storms batter heartland
This tornado, photographed by Jeff Leanna, touched down near Beebeetown, Iowa and left a trail of damaged trees and outbuildings on some area farms. Montgomery County reports trees and tree limbs down in different parts of the county. Some roadways are blocked but there are no reports of homes damaged or any injuries. Thousands of people are without power after strong storms moved across central Iowa. A spokesman for MidAmerican Energy says about 16,000 people were left without power. Kevin Waetke says outages are scattered, and range from Ankeny to Des Moines' south side. Waetke says crews will work throughout the night. But he says in areas with heavy damage, power may not be restored until tomorrow morning. Tornadoes were reported in Otoe County, Nebraska three miles west of Syracuse, three miles west of Dunbar and three miles south of Nebraska City. A tornado touched down in Cass County three to five miles south of Louisville. The storms did cause hail damage in the Omaha area. A portion of northwest Iowa was threatened with flash flooding as the heavy weather moved through. The National Weather Service says rainfall rates of one inch per hour or more were reported with earlier storms that moved through the area. Storm total
