Encampment 5NE AWDN Station

The Encampment 5NE station is equipped with a heated tipping bucket for measuring snow-water liquid equivalent precipitation. This is a huge leap forward for AWDN stations.

During the week of May 14 2007, AWDN technician Glen Roebke of the High Plains Regional Climate Center traveled to Wyoming and installed 3 new AWDN stations, located in the ranch lands of eastern Wyoming. Encampment 5NE, Douglas 5NW and Elk Mountain have all been equipped with Met One Heated Rain Gauges. These gages cost approximately $850 more than the standard 6'' TE Tipping Bucket that is used at most of the AWDN stations, but will allow for snow-water equivalent measurements to be made in these areas. Previously daily precipitation was estimated from surrounding NWS cooperative network stations during winter months.

The data from these stations became available to online users in the beginning of June 2007. Thank you to the North Platte Decree Committee (NPDC) for sponsoring these stations. If you are interested in sponsoring an AWDN station in your area, please contact either Christy Carlson (402) 472-6709 or Dr. Ken Hubbard (402) 472-8294.
