Not many changes in drought conditions this week across the High Plains Region. Little rain fell this past week in Region, which did very little in upgrading the drought conditions. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the area of moderate drought (D1) or worse totals decreased just 0.57%, to total 68.45% of the Region. These small changes were similar across all drought categories this week. On the individual state level only two states had changes in their drought conditions. In Kansas, exceptional drought (D4) continues to expand in the western portion of the state due to lack of rain. After a 1.5% increase in area of D4, the total now sits at 24.28% of the state. And as the western half of Kansas continues to worsen the eastern half continues to improve. Areas of severe drought (D2) and extreme drought (D3) had minor improvements. In South Dakota, rains in the eastern half of the state help improve drought conditions. D1 area was reduced by almost 3% and about 8% were upgrade to have no rating at all. As mentioned last week, North Dakota is free of drought and after a 4% upgrade this week, only 9.72% of the state remains in an abnormally dry (D0) condition. In Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming drought conditions remained the same as last week.
