There was wide spread precipitation across the High Plains Region this week. This precipitation aided the drought recovery in much of the Region. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the area of moderate drought (D1) or worse decreased by almost 4% this week, to total 76.75% of the Region. The wide spread rain fell from Kansas up to through the Dakotas, with local areas in North and South Dakota receiving over 4 inches. This precipitation caused a one category upgrade for much of South Dakota. In North Dakota only 2.66% of the state remains in a drought condition after last week’s rain and only 28.89% of the state is in an abnormally dry (D0) condition. In Kansas conditions continue to improve in the eastern half of the state. An area of extreme drought (D3) along the southern border continues to shrink and the D1 type conditions continue to be upgraded to D0 in the northeast corner of the state. Western Nebraska saw improvements in D3 conditions, reducing the total area of D3 in the state to 60.08%, a 36% improvement since the beginning of the year. Having much of the rain miss Colorado and Wyoming, the drought conditions in those states remained virtually the same compared to last week. Another round of precipitation is forecasted for Region this weekend, which will continue to help with the drought conditions.
