April Temperature Rankings

Share |

Source/Author: Natalie Umphlett - High Plains Regional Climate Center 04/30/13

April was a chilly month for the High Plains Region. Temperatures ranged from just above normal in southern Colorado to 16 degrees F below normal in North Dakota. Most locations ranked in the top 20 coolest Aprils and a few even broke records. Aberdeen, South Dakota had its coolest April on record with an average temperature of only 34.9 degrees F, which was 9.5 degrees F below normal (period of record 1893-2013). The old record occurred in 1950 with an average temperature of 36.0 degrees F.

April was also a snowy month across much of the Region. There were areas in each state which ranked in the top 10 snowiest. Bismarck, North Dakota had its snowiest April on record with 21.8 inches, most of which fell in one day - April 14th. 17.3 inches of snow fell on April 14th and set a new 1-day snowfall record not just for April, but for any calendar day of the year (period of record 1886-2013).

Check out the table below to see more temperature rankings from across the High Plains Region. More information will also be available in the monthly climate summary which will be available by the 5th.
