Precipitation helped much of the High Plains Region again this week. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the area of moderate drought (D1) or worse slightly improved this week, to total 86.14% of the Region. The areas of severe drought (D2) and extreme drought (D3) continued to make big improvements this week reducing in size by 3.5% and 6.5%, respectively. Unfortunately, the area of exceptional drought (D4) increased this week mainly in southwestern Colorado where precipitation levels are still well below normal for the year. Several states in the Region continued to have improvements in drought conditions this week. Nebraska, had a 13% decrease in D3 area this week, to now total 78.18% of the state. The western portion of Kansas has seen improvements this week as well. Along the Kansas-Missouri border drought has subsided, but the area still remains in an abnormally dry (D0) condition. Wyoming has seen improvements this week in area of D3 conditions. The D3 area totals 30.35%, an improvement of over 9% versus last week. The Dakotas saw little changes this week to their drought conditions.
