The drought conditions across the High Plains Region continued to improve slightly this week. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, there was an improvement of almost 2% in total area of moderate drought (D1) conditions or worse.  The area with D1 type conditions in the High Plains Region now totals 96.46%. Again, this week, the conditions in North Dakota continue to improve. Areas in the western portion of the state were upgraded one category this week. There is also a small area along the Montana border that is no longer in a drought or abnormally dry condition.  In Nebraska and Kansas there was some decline in the drought conditions.  Extreme drought (D3) conditions increased this week in areas that have received little or no precipitation recently. The drought conditions in Wyoming and South Dakota did not change this week. To learn more about the U.S. Drought Monitor, please see: http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu

In Colorado, conditions slightly improved this week in the southeastern corner of the state. The area that had exceptional drought (D4) conditions and D3 conditions has been upgraded one category. This now puts the total area of D4 for Colorado at 13.69%, about 0.5% improvement. The area of D3 improved almost 2.5% this week to now total 48.56% of the state.
