Drought Conditions in the High Plains Region- Update August 2
Source/Author: Joseph Brum - High Plains Regional Climate Center 08/02/12
It’s a different week, but the same story. High temperatures and lack of precipitation are affecting much of the High Plains Region. The Region as a whole has 87.16% of its area in a moderate drought (D1) or worse condition according to the latest release of the U.S. Drought Monitor. Some areas in the Black Hills of South Dakota, northeastern South Dakota and Southeastern North Dakota did see some precipitation this week. Those areas received totals of 2-3 inches and improved by 1 category. Kansas on the other hand is seeing the worst of it in the Region. Almost 90% of Kansas is in extreme drought (D3) or worse and the area of exceptional drought (D4) expanded a little more than 8% to now total 17.45% of the state. To learn more about the U.S. Drought Monitor, please see: http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu
Monsoon rains have helped Colorado’s drought condition this week. Almost all of the state is experiencing severe drought (D2) or worse right now, but the rains have helped the areas of D3. This week 65.35% of the state is in a D3 or worse condition which is almost an 8% improvement from last week. Check out the table below for the drought conditions over the past month for Colorado.
